All About Lip Filler

Lip Filler 101

Although hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane and RHA can be used all over the face and body, the lips are still one of the most common areas requested to have injected.   Here’s the basics of what you need to know when it comes to lip filler.

The patient consultation/assessment is one of the most important aspects of lip filler injections. Everyone’s natural lip shape is different and will respond to certain lip fillers better than others, based on the natural anatomy and the patient’s goals.   During a lip filler consultation, an experienced injector will also take into account the supporting structures around the lips.

This will help ensure the entire lower face remains in balance and also create a natural lip filler enhancement.  This translates into patients possibly needing chin filler, jawline filler and cheek filler to create the most beautiful lip filler result!

It is also important to note: there may be a need for several lip filler sessions.  If a patient has very small lips but wants to build lip volume to help balance the facial features, lip filler must be injected very slowly over a few lip filler sessions in order to avoid filler migration/spread or an unnatural appearance.  An experienced injector will make sure to cover this in the initial consultation.

The type of lip filler used also is important. The innovation of aesthetic medicine has given rise to a plethora of lip filler options: Juvederm, Restylane, Restylane Kysse, Restylane Refyne, Restylane Defyne, Restylane Contour,Volbella, Redensity, RHA2, RHA3, Redensity & Versa are all available options for lip filler.   They are all hyaluronic acid fillers and each differs just slightly in rheology (amount of structure, definition, hydration, stiffness, volume) which is important because not all of the lip fillers are appropriate for every patient.

Here at Citrine, our injector Kerri Otto, PA-C is familiar with and has used all of the above lip filler options.  She uses her expertise to educate and explain what type of lip filler will be the best choice for her patients during the lip filler consultation.

Finally, it is important to note that lip filler injections do have some risks which include: swelling, bruising, infection, activation of cold sores in those prone to them, and in rare cases, injection into a blood vessel.  This is why it is important to have lip filler injected by an experienced injector in an appropriate medical setting who has informed you of all of the risks of lip filler and also knows how to deal with an emergency if one should arise.

We love doing lip filler at Citrine MedSpa and our brand is committed to doing it the right way.   If you are interested in a lip filler treatment, please give our office a call and we will be happy to discuss your goals and schedule you an appointment.
